first Gulf war

first Gulf war
(1990–1)
A conflict between the Iraq of Saddam Hussein and a coalition force of approximately 20 nations. The Iraqis had claimed that Kuwait was slant-drilling petroleum across its border and used this as a pretext for invasion of the oil-rich kingdom. The Western response was sanctioned by the United Nations, so that technically it was a UN-led invasion rather than one led by the Americans. Hostilities began in January 1991. Aerial and ground combat was largely confined to Iraq, Kuwait and bordering areas of Saudi Arabia, although Iraq fired missiles on Israeli cities. The coalition troops scored a speedy and decisive victory.
The Major Government was strongly supportive of George Bush senior’s efforts to resist Iraqi aggression and sent the largest European contingent of the liberating forces in Kuwait. Both countries agreed that once the freedom of the kingdom was secured, they would not go further and invade Iraq and seek to remove Hussein from power. If this had been done, it is unlikely that the unity of the coalition could have been maintained.
